Köfteci Cevdet Usta – İçerenköy
We made our second visit to take information related with the most liked meatball shop of the region, Cevdet Usta. We could not almost speak in our first visit. The second visit became a nice opportunity to taste the meatballs that we missed. Cevdet Usta, continue to make meatballs as restaurant owner that he started as mobile after 8 years brake. Due to his job did not continue as he wished so he has opened this current meatball restaurant. It is hard to call here as restaurant. It is a limited area having tables in the garden, meatball are cooking on an outside grill. When you enter the garden, you can sit free stool or chair not table. The waiter or Cevdet Usta put a line on their minds and you can give your order after 5 minutes. About 10 minutes later, wonderful meatballs are coming to you on paper.
Meatballs are home style. They are juicy, fatty, not too spicy and yummy. Sometimes, outer parts of some meatballs burnt. They should care about this. There are sliced dry onion, fine cut lettuce, fresh tomato, half bread and grilled green pepper near meatballs. As I said before, portion meatballs are serving on paper. You eat them with plastic fork on plastic table, chair and stools. So, the atmosphere is definitely booth.
There are steal bread, parsley, black pepper, cumin, red pepper and onion in its mix. He also adds in it very little lamb meat and veal breast meat from young cows. He provides the meat and spices from his butcher and spice shop that he worked together for years. Cevdet Usta, complaints about not resting meatballs enough time because of dense demand. They start to service on 11:30 meatballs that they made on 09:00. He use oak coal in grill. There are no blarney, soup, open buttermilk, dessert. There are Sütaş brand buttermilk and other beverage kinds. It is open from 11:30 to 20:00 except Sundays. Credit card is not available. Its portion price is 20₺, half bread 16₺ (August 2019 prices). He welcomes also the people who do not have money. #KanGurular Gültekin U.
Taste: It is delicious. After a while, you will crave it. It has a weird addiction.
Braising: the meatballs are cooking as fatty and juicy. You can see some burnt in some meatballs.
Portion Size: Its portion is definitely enough for a normal people. If you like to eat, you should order 1,5 portion. Sidings are satisfying in respect of kind and amount.
Hygiene: Hygiene level is normal. The restaurant is totally booth. The garden, open air, very much sun shine.
Service: Because of it is very busy it hinders too much on some days. If you sit somewhere and order, the next process is easy. Be careful especially between 12:00-13:30.
Price: prices are affordable according to portion size and taste. Especially, half bread one meatball less than portion is more affordable. Everything is ok but it should be better if they give up plastic fork use. It is like a torture trying to cut it.
Lipa Köfte & Cevapcice - Kartal
We dropped off to Lipa Köfte&Cevapcice brother of the restaurant called Lipa pothouse at Sapan Bağları neighbourhood on a weekend as family. Though we wanted to focus on meatball, we could remain indifferent to Bosnian tastes. You can think here the non-alcohol version of Lipa Pothouse and more appropriate for family. Most of Bosnian taste are available in the menu.
We started our meal with Bosnian appetizers. First of all Begova soup (7₺) served to our table. It is a boasting soup and advised by Bosnian people. It is prepared with lamb rack pieces, potato, peas, carrot and broth. It is very delicious due to prepared totally with broth. I paralleled its taste to weeding soup partly. If it consists more meat pieces, it will be a wonderful soup. The second plate is the essential meze of Balkans, Soka (7₺). Somborka pepper raising in Balkans, especially in Kosovo, pickled with clotted cream and milk in preparation of it. It is a marvellous taste. Only it might be bother you due to it is salty a bit. The third plate is of course jerky (14₺). It is an indisputable taste. Chosen cow meat pieces marinated with salt. This one was the best jerky among the ones I have eaten so far. We requested also prepare a package to experience this taste in the house too.
The fourth plate is Bosnian dumpling (11₺). This dumpling is always successful. If you are like pastry kinds, do not hesitate to order it. The yoghurt served with is also tasty. Our last order was bulghur rice with jerky. It was wonderful. You must also order this. We tasted five Bosnian tastes with an average price of one main course in a chain restaurant. Let’s talk about our main subject, meatballs. We ordered meatball in casserole (17,5₺) and Plescavica (Bosnian meatball-20,5₺). Both of them made with mixture of lamb and veal meat. The rates of lamb and veal is changing according to the tastes. Besides, plescavica is also consisting jerky pieces. So, it becomes prominent in respect of taste. We did not like the smell of oil in the meatball in casserole. It has not eaten by everyone with this smell. Caramelized onion, colourful peppers and fries are redeeming features. We did not feel this smell in plescavica and its taste is successful. It is an eatable meal indisputable. Both of them are serving with caramelized onion, colourful peppers and fries and some kashar topping in casserole. We finished with tresleches dessert of Balkans. This dessert made by themselves is delicious and right consistency. They are also serving Bosnian mixed breakfast. Single breakfast is 30₺, double one is 55₺. It consists red pepper with clotted cream, mixed fruit marmalade, sojouk with egg in casserole, cheese plate, cutlet plate, soka, honey-clotted cream, jam, village butter, black and green olive, Bosnian dumpling, Uştipak (a kind of pastry) and unlimited tea. I also want to try this breakfast. Consequently, although we did not get efficiency from meatballs; thanks to Bosnian tastes the space is partly compensated. Prices are affordable. It is an away and successful restaurant. They won the hearts of local people. It is even full at weird time we visited. #KanGurular Gültekin U.
Taste: Though we did not like the taste of meatball in casserole. Plescavica could be accept as successful. If you want to a different style meatball, you can try it. The casserole, onion and peppers gave positive supplements to the taste.
Braising: Meatball in casserole cooked without drying.
Portion Size: The portion of the meatball might be satisfy with veggies. It will be useful adding a few Bosnian tastes.
Hygiene: The restaurant is clean. Tables are not so close to each other.
Service: Meatballs served in reasonable time. It is nice that waiters are communicate with customers. It will be better not to leave empty plates on the table for a long time.
Price: The prices of meatballs are average. It is normal that having a higher price of Bosnian meatball. Because it also consisting jerky. The prices of other kinds are also affordable. You pay about 80-90₺ for three person except the cost of gas consuming when you came here.

Arif Bey Köfte – Karaköy
New meatball shops have started to open in Karaköy recently. The last place of this trend became Arif Bey Meatball. It is a minimal meatball shop in Karaköy. It has opened just two months ago. They had shop on Zafer Street, Nişantaşı before. After they managed there along eight years, they came to Karaköy and replaced of place of a buffet before. The restaurant named after its owner.
I took strained lentil soup as appetizer. Its taste level was very high due to it was made in bone water and added milk. Its consistency is denser according to classic soup. Then I ordered one portion plain meatball (22₺). Six pieces of meatball are serving with puree and a sauce like acuka. There is also one piece of grilled green pepper & tomato. The taste of the meatball is good. It made from veal and lamb meat added onion. The sauce is nice due to it is not too much spicy. The consistency of the puree was juicy but tasty. The white cheese meatball is remarkable in the menu. There is also hot, kashar cheese and soujouk kinds. The classic one I tried was a bit oily. Its taste was not bad it could be better.
The restaurant is so tiny. There is no toilet inside but is a small sink. Tables covered with black & white tiles. It became remarkable. It is also possible to sit at the outer tables. When I visited there for lunch, classical music was playing on tape. It was creating a peaceful atmosphere. I did not try from dessert kinds but there are rice pudding, pumpkin dessert and crumpets in thick syrup. They are assertive especially on rice pudding. It made from buffalo milk, not containing water and starch. Pumpkin dessert is serving with walnut and sesame oil dressing if you want. #KanGurular Erşen T.
Karaköy Biga Halk Köftecisi – Karaköy
A new meatball shop has opened before 4 months ago on Kemeraltı Street in Karaköy. They had converted a historical pastry shop by taking over to meatball shop. The name of the restaurant is coming from its meats Çanakkale origin and one partner of it Sebahattin Bey is from Biga. The family of him had busy with restaurant business also. They have the idea to open such a place like here. They realized this idea with here. Two partners manage the restaurant. Two main subjects they especially pay attention are the daily, fresh preparation of meatballs and hygiene of the atmosphere. The cleanliness of the shop might be pay your attention particularly toilets. The meats are provided from Istanbul, from the animals of Balıkesir&Çanakkale provinces. The shop opens early in the morning and 17-18 kg. meatball are prepared as daily need. This amount is usually enough as daily. If the meatball start to consume they again prepare additional meatball in the kitchen. The main ingredient of meatball is heifer meat. Of course, they also add a little amount bread and onion.
Biga meatball is serving in two forms as normal and cheddar cheese. I tried both of them and liked very much. Its taste is yummy and has a soft texture. The portion of Biga meatball is composed of eight pieces of thin, long meatball. There are two big pieces of meatballs in the portion cheddar meatball. Their weights is 180 grams. Butcher meatball will be add to menu soon as third kind. A small mixed salad plate is serving with meatball as offering. The homemade pepper pickle in this plate is very successful. Blarney was also successful. They are careful about adding boiling egg to blarney. If you want to drink soup before meatball there are three kinds of soup option in the menu. Lentil, chicken broth and vegetable soup. All of them is prepared with bone broth and butter. They use organic chicken for chicken broth. I have not tried from them yet but they have seemed attractive. I advise cheese dessert (10₺) as dessert. It seems like gulab jamun but its taste is different. If you prefer, you can eat it with clotted cream. The personnel of the restaurant do their jobs fondly and they are warm-blooded humans. They make feel the warm of artisan restaurant to you. They are very busy although it is a newly opened place. They are busy on lunchtime. They are no take away service. They content themselves waiting on coming people. Prices are moderate for now but it is not surprise for me an increase on prices because of the rising costs.#KanGurular Erşen T.
